Patient Information

Find answers to common questions about our services, procedures, recovery times, and preparations needed before surgery.

What is a day hospital, and how does it benefit me?

A day hospital is a specialized facility focused on surgical and diagnostic procedures that do not require an overnight stay. By streamlining our focus, we offer a more efficient experience, lower costs compared to acute hospitals, and a significantly lower risk of hospital-acquired infections, allowing you to recover in the comfort of your own home.

What is the process, from admission to discharge?

We have designed our patient journey to be as seamless as possible:
1. Pre-Admission: Complete your digital forms online to fast-track your admission.
2. Arrival: Our team performs a clinical assessment and prepares you for theatre.
3. Procedure: You receive expert care from your Surgeon and Anaesthetist.
4. Recovery: You are monitored in our nursing ward until you are mobile.
5. Discharge: You head home with a discharge information.

When should I arrive at the hospital?

Your surgeon will generally request that you arrive 1 hour prior to your scheduled surgery time. This window is essential for our clinical team to complete your pre-operative preparation, including your nursing assessment and a consultation with your Anaesthetist. Kindly engage with your surgeon about his/her prefered arrival time.

How long is the recovery process?

Recovery times vary depending on the specific type of procedure you are having, as well as your general health and physical condition. While day surgery allows you to return home shortly after your procedure, your surgeon will provide you with specific, personalized timelines for returning to work, driving, and physical exercise. Our nursing team will also provide you with clear post-operative instructions to support your healing at home.

What are the risks involved?

While day surgeries are generally very safe, any medical procedure carries some degree of risk, such as minor infection or reaction to anaesthesia. We mitigate these risks through strict international sterilization protocols, specialized clinical teams, and thorough pre-surgical screenings. Your safety is our primary metric of success.

Can I drive myself home?

No. For your safety, you may not drive yourself home. Anaesthesia can impair your reflexes for up to 24 hours.

Does Melrose Surgical Centre work with my medical aid?

While it remains the patient’s responsibility to obtain final authorization from their medical funder, we are committed to supporting you through this process.

We are currently a Designated Service Provider (DSP) for Discovery Health (please note this excludes the KeyCare plan). We are also working diligently to expand our partnerships and become a DSP for all major medical funders to ensure broader access to our specialized care.

Important Financial Note: When contacting your funder for authorization, we kindly request that you inquire whether any co-payments apply to your specific plan or procedure. Understanding your benefits upfront ensures a smooth, transparent financial experience on the day of your surgery.
