Why iron matters before and after surgery
Iron deficiency, with or without anaemia, is increasingly recognised as a significant factor affecting surgical outcomes.
Before surgery
Identifying and correcting iron deficiency before surgery can contribute to:
Improved haemoglobin levels before operative procedures
A reduced risk of perioperative blood transfusion
Better oxygen delivery and tissue healing
Reduced postoperative fatigue and delayed recovery
Shorter hospital stays and improved patient outcomes
After surgery
After surgery, many patients experience ongoing iron depletion due to blood loss, inflammation and the increased physiological demands of recovery. Timely iron replacement may assist with:
Restoration of iron stores and haemoglobin
Improved energy levels and rehabilitation
Enhanced wound healing and recovery
A reduction in prolonged postoperative anaemia

When is IV iron particularly valuable?
Intravenous iron therapy is particularly valuable when:
Oral iron is poorly tolerated
Rapid correction is required before surgery (2 weeks pre-op, if possible)
Gastrointestinal absorption is impaired
A significant deficiency exists despite oral supplementation

Please send the patient details, a script and blood results less than 3 months old (Hb and iron studies when possible).
